Installing Utimaco SafeGuard Easy

Protect a range of different versions of Windows with whole disk encryption with Utimaco SafeGuard Easy.

1. Choosing the encryption mode
You can encrypt the whole disk, or just a particular volume. The Boot Protection mode must be used with pre-boot authentication, and allows only those users with the right credentials to boot the system (meaning that it couldn’t be booted from a CD-ROM, for example). Twinboot creates both an encrypted and unencrypted partition, neither of which can access each other, enabling users to keep two sets of data separate.

2. Workstation configuration

If you’re using hardware tokens as well as user credentials, set them up here.

3. Setting up the password

Creating a password lets you set up pre-boot authentication, so that only users with the right password will be able to access the data.

4. Creating an emergency disk

Without the emergency disk, a user could lose their data if Utimaco SafeGuard Easy experiences errors. The system lets you back up the system kernel (including the SafeGuard Easy driver and the master boot record) to removable media, so the PC can be restored in an emergency. Simply backing up the kernel and MBR in one file won’t resolve errors in SafeGuard, however. For that, you’ll need another disk with the emergency tools (option 2). The company recommends option 3 – creating a removable disk with a copy of FreeDos automatically installed to make it bootable.
